Spring arrived in the Whiteshell, first with a trickle, now with a flurry of activity.
The warmth of the sun invites us to enjoy our coffee outside on the deck, while the geese make it known they are back with a "honk if you're home" call as they fly by.
The hummingbirds are back, and it is fascinating that these teeny tiny birds can remember the windows where the feeders hung last year, and buzz around as if to say, "I know I saw it here before!"
We hiked into Pine Point Rapids this week, and while we ate our lunch beside the river, a mink was also enjoying his lunch, captured along the edge of the shore. It was our very own personalized "Natural Geographic" special!
This week has been particularly rewarding. On our morning walk, a flock of pelicans flap flap flap and glided their way past us and down the lake in their very "serious" and orderly way, white plumage gleaming against the bright blue sky. A flock of swans were resting and floating in the quiet safety of one of the bays. And two sandhill cranes flew over, wings, neck and legs outspread, coming down in "slow motion" to land in the tall grass, where they disappeared from sight.
Another sign of spring is the return of the bald eagles to Heart Lake. Heart Lake is a little "unsung" jewel of a spot in the park, beside the Rennie River Bridge. At this time of the year, many bald eagles can be seen here. This week we saw four of these magnificent birds.
Every day, another bird is "back", and we now can hear phoebes, song sparrows, ruby crowned kinglets, sandhill cranes, robins, juncos, purple finches, to mention a few. Ruffled grouse drum loudly from the forest. And of course the frogs have started up their chorus, from whatever puddle of water catches the warmth of the sun.
A pair of loons flirted with each other, splashing, swimming underwater, reappearing to stretch and arch their backs so that their white bellies reflected the rays of the setting sun. At times they were seeming interested in each other, at other times they were putting on an air of indifference, but it was quite the show nonetheless. A third loon called mournfally from across the bay.
The highlight of the week so far, was definitely the big grey wolf, who trotted down the road right past the resort and then on down the highway. We always have to have a camera on hand here, ready to go, to capture these fleeting remarkable Whiteshell moments.
The crocuses are out, and we love going for a walk to look for these furry little signs of spring.
We invite you to come and see for yourself!!
From our "wild life" to your's.
